Voices of Peace: A Community Recitation

In celebration of the International Day of Peace, the Rotary Club of Mystic, in partnership with the Mystic & Noank Library, will host a special event titled Voices of Peace: A Community Recitation on Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 2:00 to 3:30 PM at the Mystic & Noank Library.

Established by the United Nations in 1981, the International Day of Peace is now observed each year on September 21. It is dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace through 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire, and encouraging nations and individuals to engage in dialogue, education, and cultural expression. Around the globe, people mark this day with community gatherings, artistic events, and acts of unity and reconciliation.

The event will be curated and emceed by Christie Max Williams, Poet Laureate of Stonington, who will invite local poets, students, and members of the community to share original and selected poems on the theme of peace — in the world, in our communities, and within ourselves.

“We hope this gathering will serve as a thoughtful and uplifting expression of our shared hopes for a more peaceful and compassionate world,” said John Waller, Chair of the Peace Committee for the Rotary Club of Mystic. “Voices of Peace is part of the Opus for Peace initiative — a growing Rotary movement that uses the arts to promote peace, cultural diplomacy, and human connection through storytelling and shared expression.”

The program will include readings from a variety of participants, including local students, poets, and community members. The event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.
